It’s Eating Disorders Awareness Week this coming week. It’s a time when I reflect on how grateful I am for my personal recovery and also it’s a time when I think about all those out there who have yet to find this peace and freedom.
“My heart sings when I hear that someone wants to take those recovery steps”
I have some hopes for this week.
- My first is that we can spread awareness that men also get eating disorders. I want to hear their voices and know that they have support and are recognised.
- Emotional/binge eaters find the courage to speak out and find someone to listen to them. There is nothing to be ashamed of AND it is both common and yes sadly hidden.
- Women and Men of ALL ages have eating disorders, I want the over 30′s, 40′s, 50′s 60′s… to also be heard. I know you are out there.
So tomorrow I’ll be posting a vlog about men and eating disorders, you’ll find these vlogs featured here and on Twitter. @JayneMCox and under the hashtag of #EDAW. So eating disorders are real and they have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness.
The National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence suggests 1.6million people have an ED.
The currents stats are:
- 10% are anorexic
- 40% are bulimic
- 50% are in the EDNOS category, including those with binge eating disorder
I wonder did you realise that often you can’t see signs of an eating disorder, it’s not obvious?
Wishing you a wonderful Sunday,
