I love colour in my life, yes that and positive symbolism surround me. It lifts my heart and my spirits and it makes my heart sing. So when negativity pops by or the clouds gather I know that the colour in my home, office and all that surrounds me is working tirelessly to support and nurture me. The brightness cuts though the darkness and over the years this simple fact has become more evident and I am forever grateful for colour and it’s positive influence in my life.
I’ve asked Fabulous Interior Designer Vanessa Van Ryke to give me her thoughts on Colour and what she loves about it.
“I’ve always been affected by colour. I can’t recall how old I was when, as a child, I decided to have my bedroom blue and yellow – I just knew I loved it – it made me feel happy and that’s all that mattered. Years on colour is still evocative and emotive. The cool charm of white roses, butter-soft beige cashmere, grey linen, lime green glass, duck-egg blue silk, glistening red cherries, silver zinc , bright sun on warm terracotta, deep purple velvet. In their own way, they all make my heart beat a little faster.
So I now find myself working with colour. Colour and people, yes their choices – for living their lives. My job isn’t necessarily to influence but to search and inspire. Which colours do you love? Which colours do you want to live with? Wake up to? Bake with? Grow with?
The big question is always – what instinctively do you like or dislike? That’s always the starting point and the basis of a decorating scheme. As with so many instincts, maybe some of us have lost touch. Influenced by fashion, the media and what “others think”, we are sometimes no longer able to feel or articulate the passion for a colour that truly grabs us and makes our heart leap. My favourite moment, the moment a client tells me that I got it right and everyone says it’s so them!”
Thanks Vanessa, colour is magical and I know you’ll not only be creating wonderful environments for your clients but also creating positive spaces. My suggestion is that we all look at what surrounds us, does it enhance and create a positive space for us. If not…time for some simple changes.
Love to hear what colour means to you…
